The forum is designed to question high school student teams using ethics cases. Julie and the members of the board facilitated the event this past April. The event concluded with lunch and keynote speaker Patrick Kuhse, a recognized authority on business ethics and executive board member of the Eller Board of Honor & Integrity. “The subject of business ethics has always been a strong area of interest to me, one that takes particular priority within the accounting industry,” says McCollom (BSBA Accounting ’07). “Looking back to high school, I was never given an opportunity like this. As I compiled research, I started to wonder why students have to wait until sophomore year of college to be educated on the fundamentals of integrity and ethics, when high school is the time when we can have the greatest impact on their lives. My thesis inspired me to take action and make a difference in a nontraditional way.” The Board is very motivated about expressing the importance about ethics across all parallels. This includes spreading the message at an early age to high school students. In order to carry out Julie McCollom’s vision, the Board will host the forum every spring. “The Eller College of Management prides itself in producing business leaders who think critically and ethically,” said Paul Melendez, ethics program director and public policy lecturer at the Eller College of Management. “The High School Ethics Forum provides an opportunity for students to sharpen their critical thinking abilities and become exposed to real-world business issues even before they get to college. It is never too early to begin ethical discussions.” Better Business Bureau The Board has a long-standing affiliation with the Better Business Bureau in Tucson. Every Spring semester, the Board coordinates with the Bureau to help with their annual Business Ethics Awards. During the Ethics Awards process, the Board helps facilitate the businesses application packets. We also evaluate all the candidates, rank everyone accordingly, and submit a unanimous vote to the Bureau. Our participation with the Bureau has helped the Board fulfill its dedication to the outside community.
