International/"English as a Second Language" Students

All students entering the Professional Program must possess a high level of language proficiency (speaking, writing, listening, and reading) and a high level of interpersonal competency for success and satisfaction. To achieve this, the following language-proficiency policy is in place:

To demonstrate receptive language proficiency (reading and listening), all international applicants must submit at least one of the following official proofs of high-level of English proficiency in their Application Packet. Students MUST have completed this requirement and already received their scores at the time of application :

  • TOEFL score of at least 550 (Paper Based Test), or 213 (Computer Based Test), or 79-80 (internet Based Test)
  • IELTS score of at least 6.5
  • CESL endorsement based on successful completion of CESL Level 80 prior to UA matriculation

To demonstrate for productive language proficiency (speaking and writing), as well as listening proficiency, academic advisors will complete a language-proficiency survey for all international/ESL applicants at the time of the academic advising appointment. The results of the survey will be used to direct selected students toward a more intense assessment of their language/culture proficiency. This special assessment will take place during the interview phase of the application process when these selected international/ESL applicants will be interviewed by Eller College Associates who are specialists in language proficiency. This special interview, which may include an evaluation of both oral and written competency, may be scheduled at a time and place different from the Saturday-morning interviews in order to accommodate for interviewer convenience, time, and lab space. Based on the evaluation of an applicant’s language proficiency during the interview phase, one of the following recommendations will be made:

  • High-level proficiency: Admission granted. Additional language support may be required.
  • Low-level proficiency: Admission denied.
