Minors

Health and Human Services Minor

The Health and Human Services Minor is a structured minor that requires the completion of 18 units, 9 of which must be for upper division credit. The requirements are as follows:

PA 206 -- Public Policy and Administration   (3 units)
Description:   Theory and practice of executive agencies, including policy making and other functions, processes, personnel and fiscal management, and administrative law.
Pima Community College equivalent: P AD105

PA 221 -- Health, Human Services and Public Management  (3 units)
Description:   This course will provide a general survey of significant issues in the health, human services and public management fields. Secondary emphasis will be placed on how policy is made and implemented in the three subject areas. The use of and interpretation of data and practical examples will be stressed.

Pima Community College equivalent: P AD 221

Complete a minimum of 9-12 units from these options:

PA 321 -- Health Care Policy and Institutions  (3 units)
Description:   Examines public policy issues in health including recent developments in health policy and planning at the national, state and local levels and their impacts on administrative behavior.

PA 406 -- Bureaucracy, Politics, and Policy  (3 units)
Description:   Description and analysis of the executive branch of government: how federal agencies capture policy-making; why bureaucracy develops; the rules of bureaucratic culture; who controls the administrative branch.

PA 416 -- Health, Ethics and Public Policy  (3 units)
Description:   Dealing with ethical and public dimension of health care. Policy issues include who pays for health care, who can have assess to health care and the implications of for-profit health care provision will be discussed.

PA 432 -- Health Care Organization and Mangement  (3 units)
Description:   Primary focus on organization and management of health care organizations and systems, including implications for health care policy.

No more than 6 units from:

PHIL 321 -- Medical Ethics  (3 units)
Description:   Ethical issues that arise in relation to medicine and health care: abortion, euthanasia, the all ocation of scarce medical resources, socialized medicine, doctor-patient confidentiality, paternalism, etc.

POL 473 -- Government and Economic Well-being  (3 units)
Description:   The impact of government and governmental intervention on the economic livelihoods and quality of life of Americans. 

PSYC 424 -- Gerontology: A Multidisciplinary Perspective  (3 units)
Description:   Biological, psychological, and social issues in aging, including brain changes with age, cognitive change with age, and the social impact of increasingly older population demographics.

PSYC 456 -- Psychology of Death and Loss  (3 units)
Description:   Basic concepts in a psychology of death and loss, with emphasis on both the adjustment to death and loss, and the underlying phenomenal, humanistic and current social considerations.

PSYC 459 -- Adult Development and Aging  (3 units)
Description:   Change and continuity in cognition, personality, and adjustment during adulthood, with emphasis on aging processes and late life. 

SOC 303 -- Medical Sociology  (3 units)
Description:   Organization of health care in the U.S.; its impact on patients and society; health care practitioners; medical industries; policy debates.

Minor Policies:

  • 9 units must be completed in residence, 9 units must be upper division, and any transfer work must be approved through the Eller College Undergraduate Programs Office. (See pre-approved of transfer courses http://www.registrar.arizona.edu/Preapproval.htm)
  • Students in the 2004-2005 catalog or more recent must also have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 within the minor.
  • Eller does not permit double use of courses in their majors with majors or minors outside of the college, nor double use of courses in their minors with majors outside of the college. Unique units are required for the student’s major and minor. One exception: Students who complete a second degree MAY use courses from their first degree (from the Eller College major) in the GBUS minor for their second degree from another college.
