The University of Newcastle, Australia
The University of Newcastle, in the city of Newcastle, was founded in 1965. The city is located on the eastern coast of New South Wales (pop. 350,000) and enjoys a temperate climate with warm to hot summers (68-83°F Dec. Feb.) and mild winters (49-64°F June-Aug.). The area is noted for such natural assets as beaches, lakes and rivers, bordered by a hinterland of mountains, forests and agricultural fields. The currency is the Australia dollar (AUD). Current exchange rates can be located at www.oanda.com/convert/classic.
More than 19,000 students enroll annually at University of Newcastle. The campus lies within 300 acres of natural bush land complete with Australian wildlife at the city's edge and provides a well-stocked library, computer facilities, student clubs, shops, cafes, sports facilities, modern lecture theatres and laboratories. In the southern hemisphere, the semesters are reversed: Semester I begins in early February and runs through mid-July, their Fall/Winter. Semester II begins in mid-July and runs through mid- to late November, their Winter/Spring. All courses are taught in English. Accommodations include single-room residence halls or off-campus apartments.
